PRESS CONFERENCE INTRODUCES NEW BISHOP TO MEDIA, CLERGY AND CATHOLIC COMMUNITY LEADERS

It was all hush-hush due to what is called the pontifical secret, but if one put together what little news was leaked, one sensed the importance of the event. With just one day's notice, Msgr. Jerome Feudjio, Vicar for Priests and Religious, invited the media, clergy and Catholic community leaders to attend a press conference at Holy Family Church's Columban Hall on July 7 at 10:00 a.m. No other information could be revealed.

At that hour, Msgr. Michael Kosak, Diocesan Administrator, entered the room with a stranger dressed as a monsignor. On the way to the dias, he quietly introduced to those along the way "our new bishop, Msgr. Herbert Bevard."

Msgr. Kosak offered a prayer as well as a summary of the events that led to the appointment of a new bishop for the diocese. Then Bishop-elect Bevard spoke.

"I have been transferred to paradise," he said to the gathering, clearly excited about his new assignment. Although he had been on St. Thomas less than a day, he had visited a few of the churches and remarked that he found Ss. Peter and Paul Cathedral to be beautiful. He added that he does not like to say goodbye, so he hopes to be in the Virgin Islands for the rest of his ministry.

Bishop-elect Herbert Bevard was introduced by Msgr. Michael Kosak, Diocesan Administrator, to begin the press conference.

Bishop-elect Bevard shared his enthusiasm for his new ministry.

Senator Shawn-Michael Malone and Very Rev. Neil Scantlebury chatted casually with Bishop-elect Bevard after the press conference.

Claire Foster of the Knights of Malta received a birthday blessing.

There he received his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Divinity degrees. John Cardinal Krol ordained him to the priesthood at Ss. Peter and Paul Cathedral in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on May 20, 1972. Bishop-elect Bevard was given the honorary title of monsignor on March 24, 2003, and was named Vicar of Philadelphia North by Justin Cardinal Rigali on June 18, 2007.

Since his ordination to the priesthood, Bishop-elect Bevard's pastoral assignments have included serving as Assistant Pastor in various parishes in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. He also has served as Newman Chaplain at Pennsylvania State University in 19721973 and at Widener University in 19731978, and was an Advocate in the Office of the Metropolitan Tribunal. Bishop-elect Bevard is a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Knights of Peter Claver, the Legion of Mary and the World Apostolate of Our Lady of Fatima, among other Catholic international ministries, and has served on many boards and commissions in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

BISHOP-ELECT BEVARD: IN HIS OWN WORDS

With trust in Jesus Christ and in the Providential Plan of our Heavenly Father, I accept with eagerness and joy the appointment of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI as the Bishop of the Diocese of St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands. Relying on the grace of God and the prayers of Our Lady, I pledge to our Holy Father my filial obedience and fraternal affection.

I am so eager to come to know my brother priests as well as deacons, religious and all the faithful in the parishes and missions of the Diocese of St. Thomas and to continue the good work of His Excellency Bishop George Murry and his dedicated predecessors. May the Lord Jesus give me the grace to proclaim the Holy Gospel with vigor, to celebrate the Sacred Mysteries with reverence and devotion, and to provide pastoral leadership in a spirit of charity and joy.

I am grateful to Msgr. Michael Kosak, who has served so ably as diocesan administrator since Bishop Murry's transfer to the Diocese of Youngstown in 2007. His care for the priests and people of the Diocese of St. Thomas is known by all the faithful. Only I know of the solicitude and kindness which he has shown to me since he has learned of my appointment.

For 36 years I have been privileged to serve the Church of Philadelphia as a priest. I am thankful to His Eminence Cardinal Justin Rigali for his goodness to me. In extending my deepest gratitude to him, I also extend my appreciation to his predecessors and to all the priests and people of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. I express special gratitude and affection to my beloved parishioners of St. Athanasius Church who have been a cause of great joy in my life.

With great anticipation, I await my ordination at the hands of His Excellency Metropolitan Archbishop Donald Wuerl and my installation as Bishop of the Diocese of St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands on September 3 at Ss. Peter and Paul Cathedral on St. Thomas.

Confident of the help of God, I commend all my efforts to His greater honor and glory and I consecrate them anew to the spread of His Kingdom on earth.
